Summer Holidays in Devon

From the glorious beaches of the north, to the English Riviera in the south, Devon is the perfect destination for a UK summer holiday. Whether you're looking for the thrills and spills of surfing, a relaxing country break or lively nightlife, you'll find it. Devon is a county which boasts picturesque rural landscapes, rugged coastal scenery as well as thriving towns and cities.

If a summer holiday for you means sun, sea, sand and surf, then look no further than North Devon. Woolacombe can justifiably claim to be one of the top beaches in Britain. Its golden sand stretches for three miles, while the beach is well known for its cleanliness, water quality and facilities. Surfers travel from far and wide to enjoy the wonderful waves, while lifeguards keep watch to ensure swimming is safe for families. The village boasts an excellent variety of pubs and restaurants and there's no shortage of places to stay. If camping is your thing, there are plenty of sites to choose from within walking distance of the beach. If you're serious about surfing, you have to check out Croyde Bay - just four miles south of Woolacombe - which has some of the best conditions in Britain on its day. And for those who would prefer to enjoy North Devon in a relaxed manner, there are so many truly spectacular walks to take in. With beautiful rolling countryside and numerous small coves and bays to explore; there's always something new to discover.

If a walking holiday is your idea of heaven, then you have to take a trip to South Devon's wild and wonderful Dartmoor National Park. This stunning 368-square mile area of open country has a walking route for every occasion, whether you fancy a gentle stroll or a muscle-challenging hike. And for families, there is an abundance of activities for children to take part in, such as climbing, cycling and pony trekking.

The bay of South Devon - better known as the English Riviera and taking in the towns of Torquay, Babbacombe, Paignton and Brixham - offers something for everyone. Families can spend a day at one of the many beautiful beaches or perhaps choose from a fabulous variety of activities and attractions, like Paignton Zoo or the Dartmouth Regatta. A wonderful choice of restaurants and bistros lie in store for holidaying couples, who might then like to sample the lively nightlife of Torquay. And you'll be spoiled for choice with reasonably-priced and welcoming places to stay. Hotels, B&Bs, holiday parks and some of the quaintest cottages in Devon - you name it, the English Riviera has it.
